Choosing the Perfect Bathroom Tile
Article by Ashley Harned
Are you re-modeling your bathroom? If you are then mostly likely you will be picking out bathroom tile. Trying to decide on the best bath tile that fits your style and is functional at the same time, can be a difficult decision. There is such a wide variety of tile material, style, designs, and sizes; it turns tile shopping into a tedious task. Here are some tips to help you come to a decision on what type of tile will work best in your new bathroom.
Size is an important feature to consider when choosing a bath tile. For small bathrooms you should go with a larger tile to give the illusion of space. In bigger bathrooms, you can use small or large tiles, since giving the look of space isn’t as important. In shower area itself you want to extend the tiles all the way up to the ceiling. This gives the whole bathroom a more complete look not to mention it will be easier to clean, and will last longer. When choosing a floor tile try to go with something that has texture. You want to go with a textured tile for the floor because it will give you some traction to help prevent and slips.
As far as tile material, the best bathroom tiles to use are glass, porcelain, and ceramic. These types of materials tend to last longer, and have a better reputation for durability. Stone tiles are very attractive; however, don’t hold up in high moisture areas, like a bathroom.
Types of tile:
Ceramic: Most common; easy to maintain. Come in gloss and matte finishes, as well as a variety of different sizes, textures, colors, and patterns. Tend to have more of a contemporary look.
Stone: Granite stone is very durable, and almost completely scratch resistant, however expensive. Limestone and sandstone tiles are beautiful, but difficult to maintain because they are prone to stains.
Mosaics: Typically ceramic or glass, easy to maintain, and the best choice to use for tiling steps, hard angles, or curbs. Mosaic bathroom tiles are also available in stainless steel, however, relatively uncommon. The stainless steel mosaic tiles are for more modern looking bathrooms and come in an assortment of different finishes.
Porcelain: Newer type of tile, therefore not very common. Resistant to rust, these types of tiles resemble steel plates. Not to be used as floor tiling because it is not textured, and can be very slippery when wet.
Remember tiling is permanent, so if you’re not completely confident in placing the bath tile yourself, then it would be a better idea to hire a professional contractor. It’s less trouble and less expensive to hire someone first, than do the job yourself and have to hire someone to fix it.
